9 Things You Need To Know About Personal Branding

A brand is defined as an idea or image of a specific product, service or a person that consumers connect with by identifying the name, logo, slogan or design of the company or person that owns it.

Why are some people able to get ahead and succeed while others don’t ? Yet they have exact skills and training as some peers who are languishing. Personal branding makes all the difference. The brand is a tool to position you in this world.

What is a personal brand?

This is the combination of one’s skills and talents to produce value for people that creates an impression and reputation in the minds of others. – Bernard Kelvin Clive

According to Jeff Bezos of Amazon, “Your brand is what people say about you when you are not in the room.”

Some get it, some don’t but the few that get it succeed immensely. Let’s get one thing clear though, this is not about fame.

What factors come into play when you want to build your brand? How can you strengthen it?

  1. Authenticity

People have to feel the realness of your brand. It has to meet a certain level of expectation and win trust that you are genuine. This means your personal brand has to be based on the real you 100% and match your dreams, life purpose, values, passion and competencies.

  1. Consistency

Have you heard, “A Man Is Only As Good As His Word?“ Think about those words all the time and make sure you do what you are supposed/expected to do. You should be a reliable brand to your customers.

  1. Self Confidence

Without self-assurance, there’s no personal brand. It cannot be faked and is one of the most important aspects in building a personal brand. Self confidence has been proven to result in more resilient, optimistic, self-reliant and innovative individuals.

  1. Introduction

Also known as elevator pitch. If you have 30 seconds to reply to “tell me about yourself” what will you say.  In this introduction include your name, specialism, accomplishments and goals. Now practise that introduction until it becomes professional, suave and enthusiastic.

  1. Appearance

Dress like you are going to meet your enemy.

            Dress to impress.

            Power dressing.

Judging by the number of common phrases we have about dressing up, you must look the part. People form opinions about you the moment they see you, make sure it is a favorable opinion.

  1. Online Presence

Your personal brand is not complete without online assets that magnify and solidify. More than ever, it is easier to create and maintain your brand online and reach people anywhere anytime. Remember people will google you and finally, create a strong and active profile on linked in.

  1. Package It

Get the material and visual elements necessary to position your personal brand and make sure they are good enough. Your business cards, photos, emails, your website/blog all need to be up to standard. You might need to get a professional to design the cards  or go to the studio and have proper pictures taken.

So go out and market yourself. Get people excited and talking about this brand.
