Kenyan Filmmakers Among The Heavy Weights of African Continent

As they shine at the prestigious 2018 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs)

The crowning of the 6th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) night was the announcement of Phoebe Ruguru’s ’18 Hours’ as the Best Overall movie, in short it was the best movie in the whole of Africa in 2018.

This is a big achievement for the Kenyan filmmakers in an award that attracts the heavyweights of the movie industry in Africa, where Nollywood mostly carries the day.

The pack of winning Kenyans was led by Phoebe Ruguru’s ’18 Hours’ as Kenyans scooped 6 awards out of the 27 categories, 3 of them going to the film 18 hours.

With more than 120 nominations for 27 categories, filmmakers and actors from different African countries including Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Ghana, and Nigeria attended the event.

Best Overall Movie

Devil’s Chest – Hassan Mageye

Descent – Awal Abdulfatai

The Road to Sunrise – Shemu Joyah.

Based on a true story, the film is about the Kenyan man who spent 18 hours in an ambulance without getting help. Back in 2015, Alex Madaga, a casual laborer in Nairobi survived a road accident but ended up dying after spending a record 18 hours in an ambulance, while seeking emergency treatment.
